I think it is about five, between five and six miles. |
Q |

MR. LILLIE: There is a question I want to ask him. |
Q |
(By Mr. Lillie) About what time of day was it you met Bill Shimmel there in the road? |
A |
I think about, oh it must have been somewhere about three o’clock I think in the afternoon, I wouldn’t say for sure, but I think it was something like that. |
Q |
(By Mr. Park, resuming) In what direction do you live from Sullivan? |
A |
I live north and west. |
Q |
And you say about five or six miles? |
A |
About five or six miles I think it is. |
Q |
How far is Sullivan from Nunica? |
A |
Well now I couldn’t tell but I think they call it eight miles. |
Q |
And in which direction is Sullivan from Nunica? |
A |
North. |
Q |
And then from Nunica to where you live is about how many miles. |
A |
Well sir I couldn’t tell. |
Q |
Well about how many? |
A |
Well it must be about fifteen miles, something like that. |
Q |
Where were you going that morning? |
Page 151 |
A |
I was on the road buying junk. |
Q |
Well which direction were you going? |
A |
Started and went through Sullivan. |
Q |
Going towards Nunica? |
A |
Yes, sir, went south as far as the church and then turned and went west. |
Q |
How many miles east of Nunica were you from a straight line north and south from Nunica? |
A |
When I heard of the murder do you mean? |
Q |
No. when you saw Mr. Shimmel. |
A |
Oh I was about three quarters of a mile I think west. |
Q |
Three quarters west? |
A |
Yes, half or three quarters of a mile, I wouldn’t state exactly. |
Q |
How long have you been in the junk business buying rags and iron? |
A |
About three years. |
Q |
Have you always lived in Sullivan? |
A |
I have lived in that vicinity in Muskegon County, that is for the last thirty years. |
Q |
How far is Sullivan from Slocums Grove? |
A |
Well now I wouldn’t exactly undertake to state. |
Q |
What is your best judgment? |
A |
Well it musts be twelve or fifteen miles, something like that I know. |
Q |
How far is Sullivan from Ravenna? |
A |
Well about I should say eight or nine miles, probably something like that. |
Q |
Sullivan is east or west of Ravenna? |
A |
West |
Page 152 |
Q |
West of Ravenna? |
A |
Yes, sir. |
Q |
And Sullivan is west of Slocums Grove is it? |
A |
Yes, sir. |
Q |
How many miles west? |
A |
Well I should say it would be pretty close to ten miles west, that is in a straight line. |
Q |
How far is it from Moreland? |
A |
How far west do you mean? |
Q |
Yes. |
A |
About three miles I think west of Moreland. |
Q |
Now at the place you met Shimmel, how far was that from Ravenna |
A |
From Ravenna? |
Q |
Yes. |
A |
It must be twelve or thirteen miles something like that I wouldn’t state exactly. |
Q |
Now when you met Shimmel in the road there and told him a man had been murdered down by the church did you say who the man was? |
A |
What? |
Q |
Did you say who the man was that was murdered? |
A |
Yes, sir, Golden. |
Q |
You told him it was Golden? |
A |
That is what that man told me, that his name was Mr. Golden. |
Q |
Mr. Bolema told you that? |
A |
Yes, sir. |
Q |
What time of day was it when you were at Bolemas? |
A |
Some time in the afternoon along, well I should say maybe one or two o’clock, something like that. |
Page 153 |
Q |
You stopped there to dinner? |
A |
No, sir, I had ate my dinner before I stopped there. |
Q |
Where did you eat your dinner? |
A |
Back about a mile back I think. |
Q |
And in which direction back? |
A |
North. |
Q |
North of there? |
A |
Yes, sir. |
Q |
Then you got to Bolemas about one o’clock? |
A |
Well it must have been one or two o’clock something like that, after one o’clock, because I always stop and feed my team and give them plenty of time. |
Q |
About how far was it from Bolemas place to where you met Mr. Shimmel? |
A |
Well it was a mile, about a mile and a half I think or something like that. |
Q |
Did you make any stops between there and where you met Shimmel? |
A |
Yes, sir. |
Q |
How many stops did you make? |
A |
Well I stopped at every house that was on that road. |
Q |
Did you tell them what Bolema told you? |
A |
Why I told them I just heard of that man getting killed yesterday. |
Q |
That Golden was killed? |
A |
Yes, sir. |
Q |
Did they make you any answer? |
A |
Why there was one I think said they had just heard of it that morning. |
Q |
Did Bolema tell you where he had heard of it? |
Page 154 |
A |
Yes, sir, he heard of it, he told me that he had started that morning to go to Nunica, and he met the deputy sheriff on the road after he had turned off from the road running west, on the road going south towards Nunica. |
Q |
How many stops did you say you made? |
A |
Well now I don’t know exactly, but then I generally stopped at every house that I come to. |
Q |
Did you make two stops? |
A |
Oh yes, more than that, because there is quite a good many houses along there. |
Q |
How long was it that you stopped at each house? |
A |
Oh sometimes I stopped five minutes and some maybe longer, just owing to what stuff I had to buy. |
Q |
In going that mile and a half it was three or four hours was it? |
A |
Oh no it wouldn’t be that long, it would probably be a couple of hours. I never hurry. |
Q |
And if you left Bolemas place at one o’clock and you were two hours in going to where you met Shimmel you must have met him abut four o’clock you say? |
A |
About three I think it was. |
Q |
You say he told you he was coming from Nunica? |
A |
Yes, sir, that is the way he spoke to me. |
Q |
Did he tell you how he had been to Nunica? |
A |
No, sir. |
Q |
Did he say he had walked way from Nunica there? |
A |
No, sir, never said a word to me. |
Q |
You didn’t make any inquiries? |
A |
No, sir. |
