Q

What time was it when you went to the store the next morning?

A

About seven o’clock.

 

 

Q

Was that the time you usually go there mornings?

A

Yes, sir, not far from seven.

 

 

Q

Was there anyone there at the store when you got there?

A

My partner was all, he usually gets there about half past six.

 

 

Q

Did your partner tell you about the murder?

A

Yes, sir.

 

 

Q

Did he tell you where he got his information?

A

I think he told me he got it from my brother?

What was the form of the message you received as to the murder?

A

Yes, what did your partner tell you regarding the murder?

A

Why he says Martin Golden was murdered at Denison last night.  I says, is that so, and he said yes, along about the time he closed his store.  And we talked about it a little more but that was the sum and substance.

Well did he go on to tell you who told him?

A

Yes, sir, I think I asked him how he found out and he said my brother Ed told him.  He had been out a good share of the night.

Did he tell you what time it was when the shooting took place?

A

I don’t know as he did at the time.

How long was it after that that you saw the officers?

A

Well there was several of them there that forenoon.

 

 

Q

Between eleven or twelve o’clock?

A

I think it was somewhere along there, it might have been earlier than that, but it was in the forenoon there somewhere.

You say this Frenchman was anxious to get out of town, to catch a train?

A

Yes, sir.

Did you see him leave town?

A

I did not, no, sir.

Did he tell you that he was anxious to leave town?

A

I heard him tell the bartender, don’t let me miss that car he says I want to be sure and get that car.  He says you have got lots of time.

What did he say car or train?

A

You don’t know whether he took the car or not?

A

I do not.

You don’t know where he intended to go?

A

I didn’t hear him say.  He wanted to go east he said.

That would be coming towards Grand Haven?

A

No, it would be going towards Grand Rapids.

Going the other way?

A

Yes, sir.

You don’t know where he went to?

A

No, I do not.  I heard that he went north to Big Rapids.

Was that some time after this?

A

Yes, sir.
