A N D R E W   S H E E L E R, having been produced as a witness for and in behalf of the people and after having been first duly sworn, testified as follows:

 

DIRECT EXAMINATION BY MR. COBURN.

Where do you reside?

A

1040 Fulton Street, Grand Haven.

 

 

Q

How long have you lived there?

A

I lived there a year the 9th of this month.

 

 

Q

Where did you live previous to that?

A

Nunica.

 

 

Q

How long had you lived there?

A

Well I lived there off and on ever since I was a year and a half old, about 39 years - - 38 years.

 

 

Q

How long had you lived there continuously previous to moving to Grand Haven?

A

Well a little over six months.

 

 

Q

What was your occupation in Nunica?

A

Bar tender.

 

 

Q

For whom did you work?

A

Al Simmer.

When did you start to work for him?

A

I think it was about the 15th of November.

 

 

Q

And worked for him until when?

A

The first of May.

 

 

Q

You were at work there then on the 23rd day of April 1906?

A

I was.

 

 

Q

What were your hours on duty there?

A

From six o’clock in the morning until nine at night.

 

 

Q

Do you remember of seeing Fremont Brown in your place on the 23rd day of April?

A

I do.

 

 

Q

What time was he in there?

A

He was in there along about three o’clock.

 

 

Q

Who else besides Mr. Brown was in there if you remember?

A

Why there was Ed. Brown, he came in after Freem; There was a travelling man came in and Green.

 

 

Q

A traveling man by the name of Green?

A

No, I don’t know what the traveling mans name was.  There was that Frenchman there, I forget what his name is - - Joe Mahew, wasn’t it?

Yes?

A

Joe Mayhew, he was in there.

 

 

Q

Was there anybody else in there with Mayhew?

A

Shimmel, he come in there along about one o’clock, he was in there all the afternoon.

A

Yes, sir.

How long did he remain there?

A

He was there until after four.

Do you know what time he left?

A

Why not exactly what time, but it was after four o’clock when he left there.

How long have you known Shimmel?

A

Well I could not say, it was about twenty years off and on.
