My dear friend,

Lizzie, I once more undertake to write you a few lines hoping that you will get these.  This is the second time that I’ve tried to write you.  Two weeks last Sunday I wrote a good long letter and had even sealed it.  Was already to mail.  By the time I was ready to mail it I could not find it and have not yet, so that is why I am now at it again.  I guess I must have mislaid it some where. (acts like it)  As it is now nearly 11 o’clock I wont write only a few lines.

How I would like to see you.   The last time I saw you I had no idea it would be so long again before we would meet.  Have you started to school yet?  I suppose you have.

Well I am all disgusted about school.  Don’t know now as I’ll even go.  I could I suppose go now.  But you know I am taking lessons and the term wont be over with for quite a while yet.  And Mr. Lawbache would dislike to have me stop until then.  And so you see I have to be at home during the week.

Dear me I’ve felt so discouraged lately ‘bout school for I would so like to go and I hear that they are having such a good school.  And Lizzie don’t you believe I have not seen Ella since the night Mrs. Hazlett lectured at C’Ville nor heard from her.  I’ve most forgot how she looked but can remember how just the same.  (wish I could see you both).

Well Lizzie I heard that you have been sick also Mary.  I saw Katie at a lecture also and she told me.  Was you sick very long.  Was sorry you could not have been to those lecturers that I was to.  (You were probably to the others).  Did you attend the Associations?

I thought I would go sure but could not go until the A.M.  And then it rained so I was compelled to content myself indoors.  I did want to see you all so bad and then I heard Supt. Baldnic was going to be there.  I would liked to have heard his discussion.  Presume it was good.

I saw Ellen last Sunday night and she said she could not go to school now and did not know when she could.  Now Lizzie you must please write as soon as possible and tell me all of the news of interest to me.  Oh! Say, I nearly forgot.  Did you go to the lecture and ect. Monday night.  Suppose you did.  I heard they had a great time.  Well I was not there (for a xxxx) and as for dancing you may know that there are not many Republicans who felt very much like it at present.

Have you heard from Mary Frances yet?  Be sure and tell me if you have.

Well Lizzie It is so very late that I guess I will have to bring this to a close.  Our folks are going to start to Muskegon ‘bout 12-.  So that is why I’m up so late expect they will soon be getting up to start.  (all to bed but me).  (wish you was here with me).  And Lizzie, wont you please excuse my writing utensils for I have not got a bit of paper in the house that I could find handily. So as not to disturb the sleeping ones, I just took up my scratch book and have scribbled just as fast as I could since I began.  Don’t believe you can half read it but If not just keep it and when I see you I will make it all right with you.

With lots of love.  Your friend M.N.

Just allow me to sign my name here for it is not likely you would have any idea who this would be from if I did not.   Mary Nixon
