Dear Cousin Lizzie

I suppose you are anxious to hear from us.  Well we arrived in Toledo at two o’clock and we were just about starved.  It was half past seven when we got our dinner and the next morning when we got our supper.  It was none of Aunt Kate’s fault.  It was her daughter Katie that was to blame.  It was there we come first.  Aunt Kate lives with her daughter Lizzie.

Katie is married to a Dutch man with a mouth like a woodchuck.  We think he is too good for her.  Well half past seven done very well until bedtime then we were put in to a bed that was saturated with Dutch extract.  We stood that all right until morning when we were short taken and not even a paper as the Dutch man had.  So what to do we did not know and the Dutch family were lying three deep on the floor as we had their bed and we asked her for something and she brought us the butter jar you can imagine the rest as no pen can describe what we went through.

We stuck every step we took.  We stayed until Thursday night.  We were getting Aunt Kate ready to go to Michigan or we would have started away the next night.  But we felt sorry for her and wanted her to go.

Katie had quite a good deal of trouble with her face while we were there.  The pimple that she had on her face got to be quite a large lump and she had to have it opened.  We felt very sorry for her and almost wished we did not ask her from home.  It is nearly well now and I think she is going to like it here and have a good time.  She is going to write you soon.  She will probably tell you how glad she was to shake the Toledo dust off her heels.  Well we all were glad to do the same.

We got in to Syracuse at half past twelve and home at half past four.  Dear Lizzie you can’t imagine how lonesome I was when we left you at Coopersville and again at Grand Rapids for that was the last of our trip for a while in Michigan.  We hope that all our cousins will return our visit.  Dear Lizzie I hope you like your school and enjoy it very much.  Katie has written a letter to Mary and Sarah has written John.  Edward is going to write to Martin.  Dear cousin we all join in sending our love to you and hope to see you here soon

I close with love hoping to hear from you soon

Don’t tell your mother of the trouble Katie had with her face.

“It was none of Aunt Kate’s fault.  It was her daughter Katie that was to blame”: This Aunt Kate may be an Aunt Kate on the Hughes side of the family.  Could this Aunt Kate be a sister to Bridget Hughes?

“Katie had quite a good deal of trouble with her face while we were there”: This Katie must be Kate Golden, Lizzie’s sister.

“Katie has written a letter to Mary and Sarah has written John.  Edward is going to write to Martin”:

Now for some speculation.

Katie (Kate Golden, Lizzie’s sister)

Mary (Mary Golden, Lizzie’s sister)

Sarah (Kate H. Gregg’s sister)

John (John Golden, Lizzie’s brother)

Edward (Kate H. Gregg’s brother)

Martin (Martin Golden, Lizzie’s brother)

“Kate H. Cregg”: Lizzie’s cousin.  Could Kate H. Cregg’s mother be a sister to Bridget Hughes?
