The following letter from Elizabeth Golden was in a small envelope.  The letter was written on lined paper 9-7/8” by 8”.  The envelope was 5-1/8 by 2-7/8.  It was addressed to Geo. C. Brown, West Olive, Ottawa Co. Michigan.  Since the envelope had no stamp on it, it appears that the letter was never sent.  Elizabeth was 20 years old in 1893

Thinking you have about recovered from your passion, I will write and explain to you in plain terms why such conditions exist.  I am well aware of you thanking me for my company on the time mentioned in your letter and also saying you were welcome, so you were at the time.

As far as an unbroken promise is concerned, I think you are very much mistaken.  I agreed to let you know if I would be at home on Sunday or Saturday eve. and as I could not be at home I did not let you know and I don’t think for a moment that I have broken a promise.

To be sure I am judge of my own company and friends, always was and expect to be hereafter; but I do not expect to be a friend or to be in persons company that would such and insinuating letter for a little or no reason.

I think if anyone had reason to object it was I.  When I told you I would not go to the party on Aug 1 I did not go; but I have learned since that you were there, when you told me you would not go.  Of course this is a free country everyone has a right to go where and when they please.  Now you can judge for yourself on which side the unbroken promise is (if there is such a thing).  My opinion is that you were anxious for a change.

For my part I am satisfied but I feel that I have done my duty honorably if you don’t think so, you are very much mistaken.
