Very dear Friend:

 

The invitation to the wedding of you sister Kate was just received this morning.  It was forwarded to me from home and you can not imagine how sorry I feel for not being home that I might have attended.

 

My sisters wrote me that they did not receive it in time to attend; so you see we were disappointed, all around.

 

I wish you to deliver my very good wishes to your sister and my very deep regrets for not having been able to attend.

 

You are, no doubt, wondering all this time where I am.  Of course, you can see by the heading, I am in Chicago.  I came here the day after I invited you to dinner at my home and I was so very sorry when I saw the rain pouring in torrents.  Of course, I gave up your coming then and began to think that fate was working against us.  You know that was the third time I invited you to our home and each time the weather interfered.  But when I go home, I shall invite you again and I shall look for you no matter how the weather is.

 

Well today is the beginning of Lent and I am wondering how well I shall keep it.  I suppose you are having your spring vacation now.

 

Well Lizzie, I do not know how soon I shall go home or how long I may stay here.  It depends on many things.  But it is very likely, I shall not go home before July.  So, I hope you will write me and tell me all the news.
