Along Brandy Creek

The Coopersville Observer – April 24, 2003

Our season of winter feels to be left behind for certain these past few days.  The first wild flowers of spring can be seen on the South facing slopes in the wood lots.  Swollen buds on the hardwoods are giving way to leafy clusters that will soon shade that special place in the back yard where the kids hang out on hot summer days.  Farm equipment sets ready around the barnyard in anticipation of spring seedings, acres of corn and soybeans, maybe a field of oats if the rains hold off a bit more.  Livestock spend the longer daylight hours nibbling off new shoots of growth in the pastures.  Birds long gone since last fall are back from warmer climates, looking for places to nest and raise their young.

Folks seem to have a bigger smile, a friendlier wave as they great each other in the warm soft afternoon air.  Laughter and chatter from the school playground carry easily across the landscape.  Breezes shift and swirl in an attitude of discontent, subtle warnings of spring rains and summer storms to come.
